It’s a choice we should make, yearlong, knowing the systems we’re navigating and deciding, on purpose, to push back against the ones that were never built with us people of color in mind. Every time we choose to support Black-owned brands or organizations, we’re doing more than spending money. We’re investing in resilience, in ownership, and in a future where our communities are resourced to thrive, not just get by.

This isn’t a trend or a phase. It’s a long-haul journey.. one that is measured in decades, not years. Impact, not influence.

The desire came mid-2025 when I started to look around and think “one day my generation will be the grandmas… but will we be ready?” I looked at my life, compared it to my grandmother’s (and my great-great-grandmother’s) and what I think of her fondly for, and thought “nope, I’m nowhere near ready”.

These practices aren’t elaborate or complicated.. in fact, they’re often small rituals that create a sense of beauty, rhythm, and connection to the present moment.

Whether it’s refreshing our wardrobe, or adjusting our self-care rituals to reflect the energy of the season, these moments remind us to slow down and savor the transition.

Whether you’re up north in NYC, out west in LA or even down south in Charleston, SC, if you order one of these dishes, there are flavors you just expect to experience. And that’s because many of these dishes have been passed down Black families for generations. Actually– for hundreds of years!!! What a lot of people don’t always realize is that these so-called “American classics” are rooted in West African traditions.

As women, we can romanticize those memories, or we can bring that same nostalgic energy into our everyday lives. Creating a gentle, daily schedule that emphasizes your femininity while mirroring the charm of summer camp will allow you to savor this month (and the season) with intention—embracing play, rest, and creativity in equal measure.

As women, we’re often put in situations where we need to get a little tough– so never be afraid to take a stand– but we’ve found that often enough times women find it hard to be soft. We’ve been taught for so long that people will look down on us if we’re emotional, caring, or even accommodating that a lot of us have forgotten how to be.
