Growing up, Upper King in Charleston was a place that you would never dare venture on foot, it was the part of downtown you’d double check that your doors were locked if anything. But, like everything else, the last several years have brought great changes to Downtown Charleston. Changes I have enjoyed watching develop. No longer is Upper King is simply an extension of its lower half, it has now become a destination, a new place you “must visit” while in Charleston. With more and more shops, restaurants, and nightlife popping up its no wonder that even more people are beginning to inhabit the area as more condos and apartments are being developed. One of my favorite places to eat while on a quick shopping trip on Upper King is the surprisingly amazing HoM. Located a few steps away from some of the best bars Charleston has to offer, HoM is a locally owned burger boutique that offers a creative and five star culinary twist on an American Classic (that is also fully equipped with a ping pong play area located in the rear). Burgers are my jam! I love them, but after returning from Miss USA last summer I ate burgers twice a day for I had missed them so much during my pageant prep! After a few weeks of being home I became “burger-ed out” and didn’t eat them for a while. So now, for me to enjoy a burger it has to be AMAZING and these burgers really, really are. I ate the Godzilla; a double decker beef patty topped with goat cheese, bacon jam, scallion pistou, fried pickles, and smoked onion slaw. OH MY GOD! So amazing. After lunch comes dessert, right? So I walked down to Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream and got one scoop of salted carmel and one scoop of wild berry lavendar in one of their signature homemade waffle cones! SO GOOD! And THIS is why I love visiting home!
