The Ultimate Guide to the Perfect Fall Season: Porch Decor

Next up in our series that gives you The Ultimate Guide to the Perfect Fall Season is a must: decorating the outside of your home!

This season is all about welcoming the outdoors in.. and that starts with your front porch (or entrance to your house). The entrance of your house sets the tone, not just for visitors, but also for you every time you walk in the door. So why not make it festive and fun, and change things up a bit this year?

Sure, you can always pile pumpkins on your steps, but that’s the equivalent of ordering a pumpkin spice latte. And you know we have nothing against the classics over here, but we’re also about putting your unique spin on things. So if you’re looking to do something a little different this year, we challenge you to try one of the following on your porch!

Ditch your PSL porch this year and try:

Mixing Seasonal Plants and Sustainable Decor with those Pumpkins

Instead of relying only on pumpkins to drape your porch, try layering in seasonal plants like mums, ornamental cabbage, or even tall grasses in decorative planters to showcase more texture and seasonal feels. And let’s be honest, purchasing dozens of pumpkins adds up. Invest in a set of sustainable pumpkin decor (like from Mackenzie Childs) to fill in gaps and use year after year. Mix in a few real pumpkins for that authentic harvest feel.. This not only creates depth and interest, but also helps your porch decor last longer throughout the season. Pro tip: arrange everything at varying heights— tall plants in the back, medium planters in the middle, and pumpkins spilling onto the steps for a cozy, layered look.

Choose a Color Theme & Spray-Paint Your Pumpkins

One of the easiest ways to make your fall porch decorations stand out is by choosing a color theme that’s completely different from the natural colors we typically see pumpkins in. Instead of the traditional orange, think outside the box and spray paint pumpkins in unexpected colors. You know we’re gonna choose “shades of pink”  and add pops of gold, but your options are truly limitless. Changing the color instantly makes your porch look styled and intentional, but mostly… unique! We recommend adding a wreath and doormat in the same palette for a fully coordinated look.

Go Cheesy, Gory, and Full Halloween

You could ditch the clean aesthetic all together and lean into the gory side of the season and litter your lawn with D-list movie props! This is your chance to not care about what anyone thinks! Grab scrap metal, caution tape, and as many skeletons as you can find. Cover everything faux cobwebs and make sure there’s spooky lighting in every corner. You can be like The Rutherford’s and include lifesize villains and even a hearse in their front yard, but just know that your house will be the talk of the neighborhood and there will be a continuous line of trick-or-treaters waiting for a scare.. and a piece of candy!

No matter which route you take— natural and layered, colorful and coordinated, or spooky and tacky; your front porch decor is the perfect way to bring in the season and welcome everyone who comes to your door. Fall is all about creating cozy, memorable moments, and starting with your porch sets the tone for all the fun that follows. Here’s to making this fall your most memorable one yet!
