Summer was non-stop, but we’re finding peace in a slower pace as August rolls in!

I kinda feel like that’s one of the responsibilities of motherhood though— to build our routines and dictate the pace for your home and everyone in it. I’d be lying if I said I had it all figured out, but I know I feel most at ease when life looks like this.

Anyone else love spontaneity of summer, but appreciate the systems and predictability that fall requires?!

Anyone else grow up obsessed with their American Girl doll?!? I just recently stumbled across mine while doing research for my book and got the exact same feeling I did on that Christmas morning in ‘97!!

At that time I’d been told stories about slavery from the women in my family, including my great-great-grandmother Addy, and was always so proud of how Black people fought to survive it. But now, as an adult who’s been doing the academic research it hits deeper. I’m sooo grateful for this doll that taught me to find beauty in that tragedy, and for the words of @connieporter1864 that helped young girls across this nation better understand the history of African-Americans.

I’m thrilled to continue that work with my very own book!
