Teagan’s “Big Boy” Room Reveal

If you’ve been following along since the early days, then you may remember back in 2022 when MPR partnered with Crate & Kids to create a dream nursery for her then baby boy. After nearly three months without a room (not to mention bringing a newborn home to construction on the third floor) the new nursery wasn’t just a room; it was a much needed oasis.  You can find that original room here!

But fast forward a few years, and that sweet baby boy isn’t much of a baby anymore.. he just turned 4! Which feels impossible because the years have, in fact, flown by. One minute you’re up at 3am pulling your baby out of a crib to feed them, and the next minute your kid is running down the hallway towards your bed at 7am just to snuggle with you and say “good morning”. Time, can you like chill for a minute?!? Please!!

Last week we shared the Monster Truck Bash MPR hosted to celebrate his birthday. But she still wanted to gift him something special and meaningful. She knew her village would take care of all the plastic toys he could dream of (it took dayssss for them to open all of them), so she figured her best bet was updating his personal space to reflect his current stage of life.

This update was a long time coming! They actually transitioned his Nestig crib into a toddler bed last fall and she started designing the new room then. But life got in the way, and so did finding help (because she wanted to add a few things that would require a little construction). She also came across an antique wardrobe earlier this year and had been looking for someone to help bring life back into it. But a few weeks ago things started falling into place. She abandoned her dreams of construction, found someone to help with the antique update, and found the decor she’d been collecting for the last year or so (tucked away in his closet behind old clothes, naturally).

Every single piece from the original Crate & Kids design is still being used (besides the crib)– though the dresser needed a lot of repair which seemed odd considering it has only been used for three years and really… only by adults. But she still loved the design so it was worth the repair. Either way, the room already had good bones. She just needed to build upon them!!

Known for wanting to add a little whimsy to every part of Teagan’s childhood,  MPR wanted this space to feel like the setting of a storybook— think: The Hundred Acre Woods, or the swap where Shrek lives. Basically just a place where a little boy could allow his imagination to soar.

The first way she knew she could achieve that was with a canopy over his bed!!  She found this one, and loved the colors and the patches that just lent itself to that storybook feeling. The other statement piece is that antique wardrobe which serves, to her, as that tree is every story that the main character uses as a place to reflect or rest. The wooden structure grounds the room, but the mirror on the front gives him the opportunity to interact with it. And they replaced the tattered circus paper on the inside with blue striped contact paper that has a vintage feeling, but is also pretty modern and masculine. On top of that structure sits an animal basket and a hot air balloon hanging from the ceiling.

The room is cozy yet imaginative; practical yet magical. And it proves that little boys deserve just as much whimsy and wonder in their spaces as little girls often get. Y’all know MPR is a girl’s girl! And would love nothing more than to add bows and pink any and everywhere, but even she can admit how much fun it is to bring a little charm to boyhood. And if you ask her, she’ll tell you that’s one of the things missing in this world… boyhood whimsy!!!
