I think the reason WHY our family skis is more interesting than the fact that we actually do…

Todd’s mom was born and raised in Tuskegee, Alabama at the height of segregation. So in hopes of providing their daughter with a better life, her parents sent her to boarding school in Vermont for high school. There, she was introduced to the sport and found that she enjoyed it. Once she became a mother, she taught her three boys how to ski on the mountains of North Carolina. But in true Todd fashion, he doesn’t just carry on the tradition.. he elevates it for his boys. Which is why, at least once a year, you’ll find us on some of the most beautiful slopes throughout the world.

So, for us, skiing isn’t just a pastime— it’s an opportunity to honor the bravery needed for her generation to not only survive, but thrive!!!

Navigating the loss of a parent you didn’t grow up with is an unwieldy weight to carry. My father didn’t raise me, but his very being influenced me in more ways than I can put into words. He wasn’t a perfect man, and couldn’t provide me with the fairytale I so longed for, but whenever I gave him the opportunity he never ceased to tell me how much he loved me or how proud he was of me. I was never tethered to the light that blinded so many, but his presence was unmistakable and he silently commanded every room he entered. He was tall in stature, gregarious in personality, handsome by definition, and never let any insecurity he held stop him taking another inch in life. Whenever I looked in the mirror, I always saw my mother’s face. But after becoming a mother in my own right I saw soooo much of my father in my son’s face. His wide forehead that led to a very distinctive hairline, slight dimples that only showed up when he would grin, and dark almond-shaped eyes that would melt hearts without even trying. I didn’t spend a ton of my life next to my dad, but I’ll spend the rest of my days being thankful for those summers as a child on the farm in Florence.

And to anyone else who has a “non-traditional” relationship with a parent, let this serve as a reminder that you never have as much time as you think you do. This was beyond unexpected, and though I made a concerted effort after having my son to make my dad a part of his life, I always thought I had more time. But nothing is heavier than regret. Pick up the phone. Accept them for who they are. And create positive memories as often as you can. It doesn’t matter what your relationship is like throughout their life, the finality of their death will leave wounds open for good if you refuse to heal them. 🖤

Pulled out my tennis whites for a short trip up the Cooper River with @thecoopercharleston to check into Hotel Coco at the @creditonecharlestonopen. Not a bad way to spend a Wednesday!

These weekly reflections feel like a diary entry + a recap all in one… but really they’re just lessons for me to hold on to so I can be considered “wise” when I’m an old lady and have people turning to me for all the answers!!

Future matriarch, life lessons , a week in review, adult friendships, their childhood is our motherhood, start of spring
