This year they celebrated 20 years as an organization. I’ve been going since the mid-2010s and have followed them around to new homes. I’ve never had a bad experience, but this past year truly topped the list. I’m already looking forward to next year’s and have had sooo many friends tell me they want to join me!!

There’s sooo much to miss about childhood in the 90s (especially now that I’m raising my own child), but I can’t fall victim to another data mining scheme so here are a few images I found from Pinterest that sum up how I remember the decade!
90s childhood, 90s nostalgia, mixed cds, video cassette tapes, Gullah Gullah island, Saturday morning cartoons, Junie B Jones,

When I was a child, my Gullah grandma would tell us stories of how she was treated when she shopped King Street as a child. They’d allow her to shop— but through back doors. And she was never ever able to sit at their lunch counters. All because of the color of her skin. She never spoke ill of anyone, but was always clear why that part of town made her uncomfortable.
Fast forward a few decades and on this morning pictured above—before attending, yet another, celebration of a stylish boutique on that very street— I dropped my mom off at her house, then swung by my grandmother’s just to give her a kiss. She remarked on how beautiful I looked and asked where I was going. When I explained she just smiled and told me she was proud, but I knew it meant a lot more.
To see her granddaughter gallivant up and down that very street in a way she couldn’t even dream about is MY reason why and has been since my pageant days. That and wanting to prove charm and elegance isn’t only bred South of Broad.
I share this for two reasons: 1) this is her lived experience; a life that still exists. So please don’t ever believe “that happened soOoOo long ago”. We’re hardly 2 generations removed.
And 2) she has an Instagram account now lol 🤗🤗🤗 so I want her to know how much she’s always on my mind..even if I don’t call as often as I should.
Thanks @shopabbeyglass + @chassity.evans inviting me to celebrate the launch of your spring collection … and for helping me make my grandma proud that morning!!
